7/5/08 01:03 am - foodi should blog about food more last week in the supermarket, i accidently bought the expensive salmon. i though i bought the 6E packet, arrived at the counter, and 14E, oops. i thought about exchanging it, cause we are kind of on a budget at the moment. but than i didnt want to look like an idiot. i'm eating it now, on cheap toast bread and accompanied by cheap white whine. but this stuff is DELICIOUS |
6/25/08 02:14 pmjust had a thought fan fiction that's what they are really, these fictional artist books (about artemisia, rembrandt, vermeer,; etc) |
6/25/08 01:03 pm - readingreading "the painter" by will davenport. another one of those fictional life of painter accounts like there have been loads lately. including the 20th century girl finds out about something her ancestors did changing back and forward between now and then thing. there's load of "golden bear" books like that too (you know, the cheap ones you buy at the station)..., that dont get a proper publisher, mostly written by women. somehow this one did make it on the "real literature" market, though i dont think it's particularly much better than the ones i buy at the bookshp at the station for 5 pounds as escapist literature. more or less more of the same stuff. though i like that genre so i did like this too. that's too say, the first half is really good, than it starts going down hill a bit, and becomes predictable whcih the author than tries to solve by a not so good plotline/ending, that is still half predictable but than goes the wrong way, tries to be "what you dont expect", but tries a bit tooo hard, so you know anyway. sort of. |
6/24/08 11:03 am - madonna/whore complex islamic stylezumarrad, have you read this. and some of the comments are interesting too http://www.racialicious.com/2007/1 |

6/11/08 12:50 pm - memetrue statements for me in bold... i actually think i already did this one, but am in a frame of mind to think about class and money right now. 1. Father went to college. 2. Father finished college. 3. Mother went to college. 4. Mother finished college. and no, their familie were not rich. My dads parents were definitely working class, must have worked their asses of to afford it for two of their three kids. (and luckily this was in the 60ties, when there were some financial benefits in place to make this work, plus i think my dad had cheap rail transport cause his dad worked for the national rail). my mom's family i'd call lower middle class (higher end blue collar worker dad and shopkeeper mom), but she was the first girl in her village to go to college, and she was only able to go, cause their was a local campus for the first year (opened in that area to make sure kids from that area had a "catholic" option. they'd never would have allowed her to go to "Leuven" right away (a few hours drive)). and her mother also worked her ass of to afford this for her son and two girls. all three kids went to college. had very little money while doing so, my mom says she really was on bread and water for some weeks while studying. i think in Belgium LOADS of working class families from this period made the effort to afford college for their kids. it really was the trend, education was the way to make sure your kids would be ok. university in belgium does not have high entrance fees, but studying in a different town (with housing and transport costs and books) still was very expensive. 5. Have any relative who is an attorney, physician, or professor. 6. Were the same or higher class than your high school teachers. 7. Had more than 50 books in your childhood home. 8. Had more than 500 books in your childhood home. that's what you get with two historians... 9. Were read children’s books by a parent. not from the book, but my mom told us stories. 10. Had lessons of any kind before you turned 18. not sure what this means? i took gym and swimming and dance after school. but nothing academic. i was already very much in my head as a kid, and my parents did everything to make me study LESS not more ;-) 11. Had more than two kinds of lessons before you turned 18. 12. The people in the media who dress and talk like me are portrayed positively. 13. Had a credit card with your name on it before you turned 18. 14. Your parents (or a trust) paid for the majority of your college costs. No, the government did. 15. Your parents (or a trust) paid for all of your college costs. 16. Went to a private high school. 17. Went to summer camp. 18. Had a private tutor before you turned 18. 19. Family vacations involved staying at hotels. Nope, FOUR weeks in a tent. upgraded to camping car when i was 12. loved it as kid, hated it as a teenager (no privacy) 20. Your clothing was all bought new before you turned 18. NOPE. loads of second hand. and it didnt bother me. i didnt care about clothes, at all till i was in my 20ties really. 21. Your parents bought you a car that was not a hand-me-down from them. they would never buy me a car period. the question assumes it's normal that they do. weird. american i guess. 22. There was original art in your house when you were a child. nope. unless us kids made. just found out that my sisters parents in law OWN a ANDY WARHOL! along with other paintings! 23. You and your family lived in a single-family house. yes, but that's pretty standard here. not detached though, twas a house in a row with garden. 24. Your parent(s) owned their own house or apartment before you left home. nope, they were still paying for it. 25. You had your own room as a child. from age 12 on, before that we shared. 26. You had a phone in your room before you turned 18. something else that sounds totally alien to me. even rich people dont really do that here i think. but now they all have mobile phones of course 27. Participated in a SAT/ACT prep course. 28. Had your own TV in your room in high school. nope. also more an education choice than money i think. i wouldnt allow mine one though i probably would be able to afford it. 29. Owned a mutual fund or IRA in high school or college. 30. Flew anywhere on a commercial airline before you turned 16. not sure about that one. i think i was about 16 when we went to hungary with my theatre class. that was my first time on an airplane. 31. Went on a cruise with your family. 32. Went on more than one cruise with your family 33. Your parents took you to museums and art galleries as you grew up. more than we liked. of the four weeks camping this took up a lot of the days... the others were spend hiking. 34. You were unaware of how much heating bills were for your family no, we were aware, of what most things cost. my mom and dad had a detailed household expense book that wasnt a secret. and often if we wanted something the answer would be "no, too expensive". i'm gratefull they taught me what things costs and that money doesnt grow on threes but food does. |

5/24/08 01:52 pm - sharon kihara show canceledshow canceled urgent
Due to riots near the venue, both police and venue have asked us to cancel the show with Sharon Kihara tonight at the Zinnema. people who bought a ticket can get a refund by calling nicole www.crea-dance.be 00 32(0)494 22 54 75 (but please dont call today, we are very busy warning everyone). we are really sorry and upset. but it would be even more horrible if anyone got hurt, so we are rather safe than sorry. i'm sort of in shock, this is belgium, things like this are not supposed to happen here. i'd like to thank everyone who has worked so hard the last weeks to help us and make this happen. we'll be back with an even bigger and better show next year! this does NOT affect the workshops, they are at the other end of Brussels and in Leuven and it completely safe to go there! Artemisia and Nicole |
